Quasielastic neutrino scattering from oxygen and the atmospheric neutrino problem.

چکیده
We examine several phenomena beyond the scope of Fermi-gas models that affect the quasielastic scattering (from oxygen) of neutrinos in the 0.1 – 3.0 GeV range. These include Coulomb interactions of outgoing protons and leptons, a realistic finitevolume mean field, and the residual nucleon-nucleon interaction. None of these effects are accurately represented in the Monte Carlo simulations used to predict event rates due to μ and e neutrinos from cosmic-ray collisions in the atmosphere. We nevertheless conclude that the neglected physics cannot account for the anomalous μ to e ratio observed at Kamiokande and IMB, and is unlikely to change absolute event rates by more than 10–15%. We briefly mention other phenomena, still to be investigated in detail, that may produce larger changes.

Nuclear model effects in Charged Current neutrino–nucleus quasielastic scattering
The quasielastic scattering of muon neutrinos on oxygen 16 and carbon 12 targets is studied for neutrino energies between 200 MeV and 1 GeV, using the relativistic Fermi gas and a relativistic shell model. Final state interactions are included within the distorted wave impulse approximation. The different models are then employed to compute the inclusive charged–current quasielastic cross secti...
متن کاملFirst Measurement of Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic (CCQE) Double Differential Cross Section
Using a high statistics sample of muon neutrino charged current quasielastic (CCQE) events, we report the first measurement of the double differential cross section ( d 2σ dTμ d cos θμ ) for this process. The result features reduced model dependence and supplies the most complete information on neutrino CCQE scattering to date. Measurements of the absolute cross section as a function of neutrin...

For neutrino scattering from polarized electron, the weak interaction term in the cross section is significantly suppressed by the polarized term. The magnetic moment term does not receive any correction from the electron polarization. Hence, the study of the magnetic moment of neutrinos through scattering from the polarized electron leads to a stronger bound on the neutrino magnetic moment com...
متن کاملNeutrino-nucleus cross section in the impulse approximation regime
In the impulse approximation regime the nuclear response to a weakly interacting probe can be written in terms of the measured nucleon structure fuctions and the target spectral function, yielding the energy and momentum distribution of the constituent nucleons. We discuss a calculation of charged current neutrino-oxygen interactions in the quasielastic channel, carried out within nuclear many ...
متن کاملNuclear effects on lepton polarization in charged-current quasielastic neutrino scattering
We use a correlated local Fermi gas (LFG) model, which accounts also for long distance corrections of the RPA type and final-state interactions, to compute the polarization of the final lepton in charged-current quasielastic neutrino scattering. The present model has been successfully used in recent studies of inclusive neutrino nucleus processes and muon capture. We investigate the relevance o...
